CUBISM

On October 16, we began studying the art movement: Cubism.

Cubism was a movement that began in France in the early 20th Century by Spanish artist
Pablo Picasso:

and French artist Georges Braque:

Cubism rejected the idea of using perspective to create art as seen in nature.
It was geometric and two dimensional.

Objects were broken apart and the pieces could be viewed from all sides.

 Violin and Candlestick by Braque

 Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso

  Enamel Saucepan by Pablo Picasso

First we had a class discussion and then watched a Brain Pop video on Cubism. There was an activity packet to go along with the video (which will count as a daily grade). Cubism Brain Pop

Then we began our own project, A Cubism Self-Portrait.

Start by sketching, very lightly, in pencil your face from the front view, then again from the side view (left) and the side view (right). ALL ON THE SAME PAGE!

REMEMBER: in cubism you must turn your features into geometric shapes...

Add more GEOMETRIC shapes to create an interesting background...

Cut out construction paper to fit into the spaces you've drawn and glue down.

OP ART BLOBS

Monday has come and gone again! Today we started Op Art Blobs. Optical Illusions are always a favorite!

When something plays tricks on your eyes
it is called an
Optical Illusion…
Op Art is artwork that plays tricks on our eyes.

First we looked at some work by M.C. Escher:

and work by Bridget Riley:

And here are the instructions for our Op Art Blobs:

Start by drawing a curved line across the paper.  Think rolling hill... not roller coaster!

Add 8 dots across the line.
They should be at different lengths apart.
You need a dot close to the edges of your paper.

Start connecting the dots with bumps.
The dots close to the edge will go off the edge of the paper to an imaginary dot.
The lines will eventually go off the top and bottom of the paper . Fill the whole paper.

Pick a group of colors you feel work well together.
Press harder in the corners... and as you get near the top of each bump get lighter and lighter.
