Color

Today, we are beginning a unit on COLOR.

The students watched a Brain Pop video and had to complete a packet of worksheets to reinforce the information.

 BP: COLOR

Next:

  • Color Wheel worksheet
  • Warm/ Cool Landscape drawing: Divide your paper in two. Draw the same landscape twice. Color one side using warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and one side using only cool colors (blue, green, violet).
  • Color Schemes Line/Shape Project: Start in a corner and draw one squiggly line, to fill the whole page, never overlapping and ending where you started. Then draw three or four geometric shapes on top of your line. They should fill most of the page. Color each shape (using a color scheme) inside each section created by the lines. Outline in black.

One Point Perspective

11/5-11/15: One Point Perspective

First the students practiced 1pt perspective with worksheets. These worksheets used basic shapes, letters and boxes to help understand using perspective with real life objects. The project assignment consisted of 3 options, all using one point perspective. The students could choose from drawing a landscape from the front view, a cityscape from birds eye view or "winding" one point perspective.

Dia de Los Muertos

"El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado , flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades.

It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2.
In order to celebrate, the families make altars and place ofrendas (offerings) of food such as pan de muertos baked in shapes of skulls and figures, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as cempazuchitl (also spelled zempasuchil) and most importantly a photo of the departed soul is placed on the altar."

(Borrowed from this website)

Students decorated skeletons and cut tissue paper to make "papel picado"; with these we decorated our hallway!

Pictures to come.

CUBISM

On October 16, we began studying the art movement: Cubism.

Cubism was a movement that began in France in the early 20th Century by Spanish artist
Pablo Picasso:

and French artist Georges Braque:

Cubism rejected the idea of using perspective to create art as seen in nature.
It was geometric and two dimensional.

Objects were broken apart and the pieces could be viewed from all sides.

 Violin and Candlestick by Braque

 Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso

  Enamel Saucepan by Pablo Picasso

First we had a class discussion and then watched a Brain Pop video on Cubism. There was an activity packet to go along with the video (which will count as a daily grade). Cubism Brain Pop

Then we began our own project, A Cubism Self-Portrait.

Start by sketching, very lightly, in pencil your face from the front view, then again from the side view (left) and the side view (right). ALL ON THE SAME PAGE!

REMEMBER: in cubism you must turn your features into geometric shapes...

Add more GEOMETRIC shapes to create an interesting background...

Cut out construction paper to fit into the spaces you've drawn and glue down.

OP ART BLOBS

Monday has come and gone again! Today we started Op Art Blobs. Optical Illusions are always a favorite!

When something plays tricks on your eyes
it is called an
Optical Illusion…
Op Art is artwork that plays tricks on our eyes.

First we looked at some work by M.C. Escher:

and work by Bridget Riley:

And here are the instructions for our Op Art Blobs:

Start by drawing a curved line across the paper.  Think rolling hill... not roller coaster!

Add 8 dots across the line.
They should be at different lengths apart.
You need a dot close to the edges of your paper.

Start connecting the dots with bumps.
The dots close to the edge will go off the edge of the paper to an imaginary dot.
The lines will eventually go off the top and bottom of the paper . Fill the whole paper.

Pick a group of colors you feel work well together.
Press harder in the corners... and as you get near the top of each bump get lighter and lighter.

Diagnostics

This week the students will be doing what I call "Diagnostic Drawings". Each drawing will help me see where their skill levels are in different areas. They have only one class period for each and they must take up the entire page and be fully colored. If one was not finished in class, it becomes homework. The drawings are as follows:
- My Summer Vacation (shows narrative, people drawing skills)
- My Room (shows perspective)
- Landscape (shows depth and composition)
- A dream (shows imagination, as well as, basic knowledge of elements)

Here are some examples from last year (I'll replace with current drawings at the end of the week):
